About us

Life can be busy and all too ordinary. Moat Hall is a place where guests can escape the everyday and feel inspired by its bookish interior and secluded grounds. Stylish and full of character, yet cosy and relaxing, this creative country house in the heart of the Essex countryside is designed for retreats and just an hour from London.

THE HOUSE

Moat Hall is a Grade II listed hall house with Medieval origins, decorated in an eclectic style with striking art and unconventional colours and fabric. Newly refurbished, the rooms find a balance between easy, eclectic charm and a sense of drama and atmosphere. Each communal space is designed to encourage connection and creativity. The bedrooms offer calm, well appointed sanctuaries decorated with the colours of nature and subtly influenced by the spirit and storytelling of the authors for which they are named.

MOAT HALL GROUNDS

The magic of Moat Hall does not end at its doorway. The house is partially surrounded by an ancient moat, traversed by a wooden footbridge and home to its own heron. Over four acres of landscaped gardens including a vegetable plot, orchard, walled garden and a wild field offer places for quiet contemplation. A secluded heated swimming pool lets you unwind in luxury, while an outdoor tennis court and games room offer plenty of activity.

LOCAL AREA

Beyond the grounds lies protected Woodland Trust land, including walks around nearby Fordham Hall Estate and access to the Essex Way. Dedham Vale on the River Stour, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, is a short drive away, as is the stunning Colne Valley. In the 18th century, John Constable grew up nearby and many of his most famous paintings are loyal renditions of the local landscape.

The house is located between the villages of Fordham and Wormingford. The award winning Three Horseshoes restaurant and pub is a ten minute walk. Colchester is just six miles away and has the distinction of being Britain’s oldest recorded town, featuring Roman walls and a Norman castle.
